Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN)

The Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) is an approved independent information organisation who publishes trustworthy information to help patients make informed treatment decisions about private or independent healthcare. They also work with providers to improve standards.

PHIN collects data from hospitals to produce vital safety and quality indicators such as mortality rates, re-admission rates and patient feedback. All hospitals in the UK that offer privately funded healthcare, including NHS hospitals, are required to send PHIN data.

PHIN sets the information standards for private healthcare, ensuring that data is consistently collected and thoroughly checked by hospitals. They collate information on performance measures such as:

  • activity levels
  • average lengths of stay
  • patient satisfaction
  • other indicators e.g. rates of unplanned admissions
  • returns to theatre.

Information collated is for both hospitals and individual consultants to help patients make more informed choices.

Aspen Healthcare co-operates fully with PHIN and submits this non-identifiable data to PHIN as another useful tool by which we can demonstrate the quality of our services and identify opportunities for further improvement.

Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)

Aspen Healthcare also collects information on the effectiveness of care delivered to patients as perceived by the patients themselves, based on responses to questionnaires before and after surgery using Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs).

For example, look at our facilities’ statistics below detailing the % of respondents who recorded an increase in their health gain following hip and knee replacement surgery.

Note: Due to the nature of the data collection nationally, there is a time lag to publishing and hence, reporting years are behind.

In 2018 we started collecting Q-PROMs for cosmetic procedures.

Patient-led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE)

Aspen Healthcare’s hospitals and clinics participate in the national annual programme of patient-led assessments of the care environment (PLACE). These assessments involve local people, often current or past patients, joining Aspen staff to assess how the environment supports a patient’s pathway through our facilities. Areas such as privacy and dignity, food, cleanliness and general building appearance & maintenance are assessed and this programme provides vital information and motivation for improvement by taking advice directly from our patients about how our environment or services could be further enhanced.
